The History of Modern Web Development

A journey through 20 years of web development — from static HTML and PHP, through the rise of JavaScript frameworks, to the modern era of meta-frameworks and server-side rendering.

We see a cyclic pattern of history repeating itself. Many developers learning all the hip frameworks, libraries and tools may not know where we all came from — what moved the original developers to push these tools into new directions.

This talk takes us through 20 years of web development, from the current Angular, React and Vue-dominated markets, to the underlying roots of how it all came to be, and back to all the modern solutions like Next.js, Nuxt.js, Qwik and Astro.
